Finally, an update on Sassy and her pups. 7/26/2010
It has been a long road, but Sassy had her first solid bowl movement yesterday and we feel that she is finally out of pain and on her way to being well. She has been through Mercer, the worse staff infection you can have, two vets, three surgeries’, and a car load of medications totaling about $4,000 at this time. The five puppies are doing well, their foster mom has taken such excellent care of them and has just about given up her life to supply the constant care and attention that Sassy and her pups needed.
However, due to the high cost of Sassy's medical care and the fact that two of our most active board members have health issues at the moment, we will not be doing intake or have the ability to answer phone calls at this time. We will return emails as soon as possible. Don't forget we do have many adoptable dogs ready to go and your best friend may be just waiting for you to click on him/her on our website.
We will be doing Treasure Isle Flea Market every Saturday and Sunday from 9 to 5. Isle 3, the first booth up from the food court. We will be there for at least the next month, and are thinking we may stay there permanently to give rescue dogs a presence there and to spread the word about puppy mils and rescue dogs. We will have some of our adoptable dogs and dog items to try to sell to pay for Sassy's medical bills and get us back into a position were we can take in dogs again. Please come and visit us, even if it is just to say hi. Sassy will be making an appearance as soon as we are sure she is over her staff infection and I am sure she would love to say thank you in person to all of you who have supported her though this.

Sassy and Zeus
Skinny Sassy
UPDATE 7-4-2010
Sassy lies in the hospital today hanging onto a thread. She is depressed, seems to be saying she has had all the pain she can take. She responds to her foster dad's voice only. We are trying to set up a schedule to help the foster parents with the feeding of her pups. Sassy was able to be with them and feed from the time she had her emergency c-section on Saturday till Wednesday. Wednesday we took her for her pelvic surgery and she sat there all day. They did not get to her. We took her back the next day but it all has seemed to be TOO much stress on her and her poor malnurished body.
Guess who came to dinner????
UPDATE ON SASSY....Sassy was rushed into an emergency C-section late Saturday. Six of the pups lived. Sassy was scheduled for a C-section on Monday and our vet was doing it for $500. The emergency took $1200 and broke us. We will be at Treasure Isle Flea Market in Monroe this weekend, July 3rd, from 9 to 5. We will be under the shelter outside. We will be selling our home made dog toys, belly bands, harness's and bandana's trying to raise the money for Sassy's operation. We will be showing some dogs there but due to the weather not sure which ones at what time. If you would like to meet one of our dogs please call 513-851-0113 and we will do our best to have it there if it is not too hot at that time of day.

SASSY "To Tell You The Truth"Sassy is less then two years old. But in that short time she has endured a lifetime of pain. Today is June 24th and Sassy is laying in the hospital with a broken pelvic bone inflicted on her by a human kicking her. The x-rays show that Sassy has 7 tiny pups with heartbeats inside. They have only had 50 days inside mom and the x-ray does not look like they are calcified enough to make it. Sassy's beating has caused her to go into premature contractions. Sassy will have to endure the pain as she cannot be sedated with the puppies.
Sassy may have to have a C-section tomorrow. The way her bone is broken she can't deliver the pups naturally. When Sassy has her puppies she will have to wait ten days and then she will go back to have a plate put on to mend her pelvic bone. So Sassy has a lot of pain to endure yet to get well and find her forever home. The C-section and the operation are going to cost a lot. If you would like to donate to help Sassy and her puppies you can use the chip in button on this page. To donate directly to Luvfurmutts please call 513-851-0113 or email luvfurmutts@hotmail.com for the address.
Last night we got an email from another rescue asking for a rescue to take Sassy. We do small dogs and don't do puppies at all. But something told her we needed to go get Sassy. A lady, saying she was her owner, took her to a vet in Dublin, Oh after three days of laying out side, tied with a three foot rope, unable to stand and having to just lay there and potty. The story Sassy's owner told the vet just did not add up. They said that they did not know when she got pregnant and that she was hit by a car. But the lady lived in an apartment. After examination by Dr. Achtel at Noah's Arc in Dublin and by Dr. Kitchen at Colerain Animal Clinic in Cincinnati, both vets said this bone breakage could not have been caused by a car or there would be some internal trama. This break looks more like blunt force trama directly inflicted. Dr. Kitchen decided to wait till tomorrow to do a c-section and we were to try to find out how far along the puppies were. After an hour conversation with Sassy's surrender we found out that Sassy is her mothers dog. Sassy did not live in an apartment but was tied out all of her life on a three foot rope. She knew that Sassy had been kicked so hard Sunday that she could not stand up and her mother was just going to let her lay there and die. Embarrashed, but wanting to help, the daughter took the dog against her mothers will and asked for a rescue to take her. Out of fear that charges would be pressed against her mother if she told the truth she said Sassy was her dog and she was hit by a car.
We are thankful she got Sassy out of that situation. It was odd that the more we talked to her the more we heard, "To Tell You The Turth" and then the story changed till we finally got to the truth. Sassy has been her mothers dogs all her life. She was left in a crate for days. Sometimes she would she would feed her, some days she would not. IT was normal for members of the family to kick Sassy out of the way or to just kick her. She would not give her water because she said it made her pee. When she pottied in the house she kicked her and beat her. Then she tied her outside. The other daughter did not like her and is the one who kicked her hard enough to break her bone. The more we heard the less we wanted to hear. The surrender actually said, "I watched them beat her and do you know what Sassy did?" I said no, she said she layed there and wagged her tail at them. We were amazed today that as much pain as she was in she let us pet her, lift her and move her around without so much as a growl. Sassy has lived in pain her entire life. She does not know any other sort of life.
We have promised Sassy that she will never be chained, kicked or beat again.
Looking for a dog? HAVE YOU OVER LOOKED THE ADVANTAGES OF ADOPTING AN OLDER DOG? Older dogs have worked out their potty training, destuctive behaviors and personality problems in their first homes. YET, everyone wants a puppy. Instead of seeing an older dog as a well trained asset for the family, most families want to start with a puppy. This often results in the puppy being dropped at a shelter when the family does not know how to deal with the terrible two's which most dogs go through just like children. If you have two to three years to constantly keep your eye on a puppy, train it, deal with the things it chews up, etc. then a puppy might be for you. But if you have a busy schedule and an active family why not consider an older dog who will move right in, be trained and fit right into your family?
Here are some of our Happy Tails of older dogs we have rehomed in the last couple of months.
ECHO
Echo's is a 9 year old cocker. His owner brought him in to put him to sleep. When the vet called us and asked if we would like him, we knew that most of our cockers have lived to be 18 and older. Echo is only half way through his life. So we jumped at the chance to find his new forever home. Echo's coat was so over grown he looked like a little sheep. He had thorns embeded through out his coat. Had to be very uncomfortable yet he was as sweet and happy to see us as he could be. After a grooming, dental and catching Echo up on his medical work we were surprised to find a very well mannered, well trained dog under all that hair. Echo spins for a treat, knows sit, down, loves to chase a ball and acts like a teenager. YET, everyone wants a puppy. We wondered would we ever find the right forever home for Echo? Would anyone even give him a chance to prove what a good dog he is.
Then we met the Pellegrin family. After years of wanting a dog they had finally decided that this was the time to add a new family member. But their new member had to get along with the entire family. Not ever having one and not knowing a lot about dogs they decided to keep realistic expectation while they looked for their forever friend. When they met Echo it was love at first site.
Carol and Judy,
We just wanted to tell you how thrilled we are to have Echo as part of our family. He is such a wonderful, wonderful dog! But you already knew that. Echo was very anxious his first week with us. He missed Judy and Paul so much he got an upset tummy. But bit by bit he learned to trust us and now he is starting to relax and bond with all of us. He seems to feel much better now. We all adore him. We love everything about him. We love how obedient he is, how he plays fetch, how well he walks on a leash, how he nudges our hand with his nose when he wants scratched, how he army crawls across the floor. We love his sweet, sweet temperament. We love his smile. And we especially love how he invites himself to curl up with us wherever we are. We feel that Echo is an angel from heaven. He is just the perfect little dog. And we just wanted to say thank you so much for rescuing him for us. If you ladies ever need anything at all, please don’t hesitate to ask. We believe in what you are doing and we would be honored to help in any way.

ROCKY
Rocky is an 8 year old pug with about 80% hearing loss. His owner turned him in
saying they could no longer afford to care for him. After a dental, catching up his medical work and clearing up an ear infection we found Rocky was trained to be with a wheel chair bond person or a bed patient. He is not afraid of motorized chairs or any medical equipment his owner needs to function. We feel that there is a perfect home waiting for every dog. We just have to find it. And sure enough the manager of an 8 patient nursing home in Dayton, Oh was looking for a dog that would fit with all the residents. We took Rocky up, made sure the residents knew his needs and how to care for him and left him for a trial. Rocky was adopted by Bob Morley. Bob has wanted a dog, as he said, "forever" but did not think he would find one that would fit his living situation. Bob has gotten up with a smile on his face everyday since he has adopted Rocky. Bob is moving faster now as he rolls out to the main room to tell the other residents cute little things that Rocky does. When Bob leaves for therapy Rocky just moves on to another lap. They all love him and he loves them. The hearing loss is a blessing instead of a problem as they often get deliveries in the middle of the night and Rocky does not bark when the door bell rings.

We will not be bringing the puppies there as they are too fragile and there are too many diseases they could catch by being subjected to many people and animals till they have had their shots and a chance to build their immunities. We will be putting them on the website for adoption in the next two weeks. They turned four weeks old Saturday, we would like to wait till they are weened and at least six weeks old to put them up for adoption. Sassy will be making an appearance as soon as we are sure she is over her staff infection and I am sure she would love to say thank you in person to all of you who have supported her though this.

Soleil
Soleil is an 8 year old bichon. Her mom loved her very much and had her since she was a puppy. She could no longer care for her due to illness. Soleil's new forever home had two bichons. One 10 and one 12 years old. One died and left the other one very loney. Roxy was so depressed that he suggested they get another dog. Not wanting to get a puppy or a high energy dog who would aggravate their older dog the family made a wise decison and went with Soleil.

Sugar Baby is a 10 year old bichon. She is very happy in her new home with her new brother.
Sugar Baby
Dear Carol,
June Adoptions
Sugar is a 6 year old puppy mill dog who was with us from August of last year. You can read about Sugars story by clicking on this link Sugar a puppy mill dog. Sugar was brought to us in garden gloves. The last two homes she was in were trying to breed her and she wanted nothing to do with that. We are glad she bit them. Five years in a puppy mill was enough. Now Sugar is learning how to be a house pet. It is still a long road for Sugar. Her adopter has her work cut out for her. But Sugar got lucky and found a very special family who love her inspite of her past and are only interested in making her forget it and live as a pampered family member in the future. Sugar went to VA. We do not usually let our dogs go that far away but this is the perfect home for Sugar. Her mom has lots of rescue experience as well as experience with Peke's and the patience and love to bring Sugar the rest of the way into a normal world with a loving family.
Sugar in her new home Sugar and her new mommy

Hi Carol! Wanted to check in and let you know that my baby is doing good. She's been eating much better. I've been putting pieces of chicken in her Iams crunchy food or some of my scrambled eggs in the mornings. She eats the 1 kind of treat that I got her, but will not touch any of the ones that you sent with her. She's doing pretty good going on the pee pads. She's very curious about the front porch. She won't go out with me but watches me while I'm grilling dinner.
I got so tickled when I came home today. I don't work at the store on Friday's. I clean for a lady that I started cleaning for back in 1995. I've cleaned for her so long and we are so close, they are like family. Well, anyways....I walked in the door and I always speak to the babies to let them know it's me. Well, my baby was actually glad to see me. She was wagging her tail and looking so happy. I walked up to her and she let me pet her. Her tail was wagging the whole time. I couldn't believe it! I couldn't wait to tell my hubby. I even called Mommy to tell her. You'd love my Mom. She's so sweet that it's unbelievable.
Anyways, just wanted to let you know that she's doing much better. I feel so hopeful! Hope things are going well with you. Take care!!

Rescues are in dire need of foster families. The way it works is we supply the crate, food, medical care and you supply the home and love for a homeless dog till the right family is found for the dog. Many families rescue because they have one dog who is lonesome alone but they cannot afford to take on a second dog. Fostering can help your pet and the homeless pet too. All dogs are given an exam by a licensed vet and given all medical treatment prior to being placed in foster homes.
If you can find room in your heart and home to save the life of a dog please click here for a foster application.

The Rescuer's Creed
I promise I will take your unwanted animals.
I will heal their wounds, their diseases, their broken bones.
I will give them the medical attention they need and deserve.
I will nurture their starvation and give them a warm place to sleep.
I will spay and neuter them, vaccinate them against the diseases that can harm them.
I will treat them and honor them. I will buy them toys, blankets, balls, and teach them to play.
I will speak softly to them. I will try to teach them not to fear, not to cry, and not to hate.
I will whisper sweet, kind, gentle words into their ears,
while gently trying to stroke their fear, their pain, and their scars away.
I will face their emotional scars and give them time to overcome them.
I will socialize them, potty train them, teach them to be obedient,
show them dignity, hold their paws, and stroke their ears if they
have endured too much and walk them over the Rainbow Bridge,
BUT most of all I will teach them LOVE.![]()
